MDEPARTMENT × MALTA

Custom Software Development

CUSTOM SOFTWARE

Custom software development pays off once your team spends more time moving data between tools than working with it. For companies in Malta, that point often comes with growth: a payment institution or iGaming operator whose onboarding checks live in shared spreadsheets, a company service provider tracking client deadlines in an Access database nobody dares to touch, or a manufacturer in Ħal Far or Bulebel re-keying orders from customer emails into its ERP. Where the MFSA or the MGA supervises your business, it also matters who changed a record and when – a question a spreadsheet answers poorly. MDEPARTMENT, a digital studio based in Germany, builds software around the process you actually run: maintainable applications that connect to your ERP, CRM and accounting systems, automate repetitive steps, keep an audit trail and belong entirely to you, source code and documentation included.

Custom Software Development

  • Every record is kept in one place instead of in competing spreadsheets.
  • Your ERP, CRM and accounting software exchange data without anyone re-keying it.
  • Approval workflows, reminders and reports run automatically, with a complete audit trail.
  • You own the source code and can hand it to any other developer.
01

Process before code

We sit down with the people who do the work, by video call or at a workshop in Malta, and map the process step by step, exceptions included. The result is a written scope with clear priorities and a fixed price.

02

Working software early

Before development starts, you click through a prototype of the core workflow; after that, you try out each new increment in a test environment. Your feedback shapes the next cycle while there is still time to change course.

03

Built for handover

We write strongly typed code with automated tests, documented interfaces and a clear data model, kept in a repository you control. Any competent developer can maintain it, including an in-house team you may build later.

Frequently asked questions — Malta

Why does custom software start at €15,000, and what drives the price?

Below that amount, a project can rarely cover what keeps software useful for years: a mapped process, a tested data model, interfaces to your existing systems, documentation and a proper handover. A budget of €15,000 covers a clearly defined tool, for instance a back-office application replacing one department's Access database. Above that, the price depends on the number of user roles; the systems to be connected, such as ERP, CRM, payment or KYC providers; data migration from old files; and whether you need four-eyes approvals or detailed audit logs. After a free initial call and a short scoping phase, you receive a fixed price in euros for an agreed scope. Larger projects are split into separately priced phases, so you can pause or reprioritise after each one.

From first call to working software: what happens, and how long does it take?

It begins with a free call in which you describe the process and where it causes friction. In a scoping phase of a few workshops, by video or on site, we map the workflow, the data and the interfaces, and agree on what belongs in the first release. You then see a clickable prototype of the core steps before development starts. Together with the fixed price, you receive a written schedule for that first release. Once it is live, it runs alongside your existing spreadsheets until the migrated data has been checked, and further features follow in short cycles. How long the whole project takes depends on its scope, on how quickly third-party providers grant access to their interfaces and on how fast decisions are made on your side.

What does working with a German studio mean for language, time zone and invoicing?

Malta and Germany share a time zone, so calls and reviews fit into normal office hours on both sides. Projects run in English or German, whichever your team prefers, and the user interface, documentation and code comments can all be in English. We have no office in Malta and work remotely, via video calls, a shared project board and a test environment you can open at any time. If you would like an on-site workshop, for instance to map a process that spans several departments, we come to Malta. Invoices are issued in euros by KRUPKA Concept GmbH. For VAT-registered businesses in Malta, the EU reverse-charge mechanism normally applies: no German VAT appears on the invoice, and you account for the VAT in Malta instead.

Who owns the software, and what happens if we change provider later?

You do. With the final payment, you receive full rights of use and the complete source code; if you prefer, the repository sits in your own account from the first commit. We document the architecture, data model, interfaces and deployment, and build on widely used technologies rather than proprietary platforms, so another developer or your own IT team can take over without starting from scratch. Hosting can run in your own cloud account in an EU region. If your firm falls under DORA, we also set out hosting, subcontractors and exit arrangements in the contract, which supports your register of information and your exit planning. We charge no licence fees and there is no lock-in; a maintenance agreement is optional if you want us to stay involved.

If a process in your business depends on one spreadsheet, one person's memory or one fragile database, tell us about it. In a free initial call, we look at where time and data are lost and whether custom software is the right answer; sometimes a standard tool does the job. Where custom software is the better fit, you receive a clear scope and a fixed price in euros.

Let's talk about your project, your vision and your brand.
