MDEPARTMENT × MALTA
E-commerce development
E-COMMERCE
E-commerce development for a business in Malta means building a shop around the realities of an island market. Orders go to addresses across Malta and Gozo, often to buyers elsewhere in the EU, and sometimes to visitors who discovered a product on holiday and want it sent home. Each destination brings its own delivery options and shipping costs, and sales to consumers in other EU countries follow their own VAT rules. Customers expect to pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with the strong customer authentication that EU payment rules require but without needless detours, and the stock shown online has to match what is on the shelf. MDEPARTMENT, a Germany-based digital studio of KRUPKA Concept GmbH, designs and builds online shops for Maltese retailers, producers and wholesalers, with a fast checkout, connected payment, shipping and inventory systems, and as many languages as your customers need.

E-commerce development
- Customers check out in a few steps with card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Delivery options and costs for Malta and Gozo are clear before payment.
- Stock levels, orders and invoices stay in sync with your inventory system.
- Buyers in other EU countries shop in their language and pay the correct VAT.
Checkout first
We start with the route from product page to order confirmation, including delivery zones, click-and-collect and returns, and remove every step that does not help a customer decide or pay. Forms, buttons and product pages are built to WCAG 2.1 AA, the level generally used to meet the European Accessibility Act, which applies to many shops selling to consumers.
A platform that fits
Depending on catalogue size, B2B requirements and who will run the shop day to day, we build on Shopware, WooCommerce or a headless set-up with Next.js, and we set out the trade-offs in running costs and flexibility openly. Code, product data and platform accounts remain yours.
Tested end to end
Your payment provider, couriers and inventory or accounting system are connected via their APIs and checked with test orders, refunds and failed payments before launch. After go-live, we can keep the shop updated, secure and fast.

Frequently asked questions — Malta
How is the price of an online shop calculated?
We do not publish a flat starting price for online shops, because two shops that look similar can differ widely in effort. The price depends on the size of the catalogue and its variants, the number of languages, the payment, shipping and inventory systems to connect, B2B features such as customer-specific prices, and any migration from an existing shop. As a point of reference, our websites start at €3,000 and custom software at €15,000. After a free initial call, we define the scope with you and send a fixed-price offer in euros that does not grow with the hours we put in. Ongoing costs such as hosting, platform licences or payment-provider fees are listed separately, so you can see what running the shop will cost before you commit.
How long does it take to launch a new shop or move an existing one?
The timeline depends less on design than on integrations and data. Payment and shipping logic, an ERP connection, several languages or a large catalogue to migrate all add time, so we agree the schedule with you alongside the fixed price, before work starts. The project runs in clear stages: requirements workshop, checkout and page concept, design, build, data import and testing with realistic orders on a staging shop. The task most often underestimated is product data: descriptions, images, weights for calculating shipping and VAT categories. When replacing an existing shop, we redirect old URLs so that search engines and customers' bookmarks find the new pages. If your sales peak in summer or before Christmas, we schedule the launch well ahead of your busy season.
Our business is in Malta and your studio is in Germany. How does that work day to day?
Remotely, and the distance rarely shows. We have no office in Malta. Projects run in English or German, with a single point of contact, video calls in the same time zone and a staging shop where you can place test orders at any stage. For a kick-off or a workshop with your sales and warehouse teams, we come to Malta on request. Invoices are issued in euros by KRUPKA Concept GmbH. For business clients with a valid EU VAT number, the reverse-charge mechanism applies: we invoice without German VAT, and you account for the VAT in Malta. Each invoice shows both VAT numbers and the reverse-charge note, so your accountant can process it without follow-up questions. For individual tax questions, your tax adviser remains the right person to ask.
Can the shop handle deliveries to Gozo and sales to customers elsewhere in the EU?
Yes, and both are planned from the start, not bolted on later. For Malta and Gozo, we set up delivery zones with their own rates and lead times, as parcels to Gozo go by ferry, plus click-and-collect from your shop or warehouse. Rates can depend on weight, size or basket value; where your couriers offer an API, labels and tracking links are generated from the order. Buyers in other EU countries see the shop in their language. Once your distance sales to consumers across the EU pass the EU-wide threshold, the shop calculates VAT at each customer's national rate, which you can report through the One-Stop Shop (OSS). Your accountant confirms the tax set-up; the shop applies it consistently and provides the figures for your return.
Tell us what you sell, where your customers are and which systems you already use, whether that is a spreadsheet or an ERP. In a free initial call, we look at your catalogue, checkout and delivery set-up together, then send you a fixed-price offer in euros. If your existing shop needs targeted improvements rather than a rebuild, we will tell you that too.
Let's talk about your project, your vision and your brand.
